San Joaquin Section
Welcome to San Joaquin Section
Greetings CASCWA San Joaquin Section Members,
Happy New Year! I can’t believe that it is February already. Things have been increasingly busy here in San Joaquin Section. On December 8th, the section coordinated a winter workshop that was held in Tehachapi. The one day workshop focused on topics relating to legal issues surrounding foster and homeless students, developing practical procedures to supporting foster and homeless youth, and understanding the California Data Dashboard regarding suspensions and chronic absenteeism.
The San Joaquin Section is also proud to host the 82nd Annual CASCWA State Conference at the Doubletree Hotel and Conference Center in Fresno. The State Conference is scheduled for May 9-11, 2018 and on behalf of the San Joaquin Section, I’d like to personally invite you to attend.
Over the course of the three day conference, seven (7) individual strands of training will be offered through various breakout sessions, each of them encompassing Multi-tiered Systems of Supports (MTSS) and equity for all sub groups. The breakout sessions will cover the most effective truancy interventions, chronic absenteeism interventions, proven programs to reduce suspensions and expulsions, trauma informed practices, Tier 1-3 supports, competent cultural practices, and so much more!
During a luncheon on the second day of the conference, the San Joaquin Section will also be recognizing several amazing students with the “Anthony Brucia Success Award.” The recipients of these awards have overcome immense odds and have demonstrated the true meaning of resiliency. These students also validate why we must never give up on our youth and must always push them, support them, and maintain the highest expectations for them. We can all learn a lot from our kids! This is a luncheon that you will not want to miss!
To ensure adequate space for all breakout sessions, we’ve secured several conference rooms next door at the Fresno Convention Center as well. This will be a State Conference that you will not want to miss! If you are planning to attend, it is recommended that you make your hotel reservations ASAP, as the hotel is guaranteed to sell out.
We look forward to seeing you all in Fresno!

Anthony Brucia Success Awards – Scholarship
Award Application 2017-18 (Coming February 1, 2018)
In the 1990’s, the San Joaquin Section scholarship program was launched under the leadership of past CASCWA President, Joe Brucia. His 19 year old son, Anthony had just passed away. There were many community donations given toward a fund in his name. Knowing that most donated funds soon run out, Joe and his wife, Shirley, offered to transfer the funds to CASCWA. To accept the donation, CASCWA had to match and perpetuate the fund. CASCWA accepted and soon made the award an annual event that now reaches students attending high schools throughout Central California. As of May 2016, just over $100,000 has been provided to the winners of this award.
As you explore our website you will find information on Child Welfare and Attendance (CWA) Advocacy and Policy Work, CWA Professional Learning opportunities such as our Annual State Conference and many other resources to support your work with children and youth in your local community. There will be ongoing updates on the website so be sure to come back.
