Bay Section

President’s Message

Hello Bay Section and Friends,

The work continues in Bay Section! We held a very successful Fall Workshop on November 29th at the Alameda County Office of Education with approximately 40 educators in attendance.

Our presentations included Sloan Simmons, Attorney at Law with Lozano Smith speaking on “Schools, Students and Speech in a Time of Political and Social Tensions”. A very timely topic with plenty of information to digest and take back to our sites. Our second presenter ws Barbara Pinto, Immigration Attorney from Centro Legal de La Raza who addressed the topic “Do You Know Your Rights?”. Another excellent hot topic and that elicited a lot of discussion.

Bay Section awards seven scholarships each year to deserving graduating high school seniors who have overcome unique obstacles and difficulties. The students we want to recognize are those who may have had to overcome lack of success early on due to personal or family problems, attendance or discipline issues. These students may have benefited from the intervention of a school counselor, community agency or a child welfare and attendance worker.

This year, we will be awarding a scholarship in honor of Leslie Rothwell, longtime Bay Section’s Executive Board Member, who passed away last August. She worked for many years in Student Services and other capacities in the Castro Valley Unified School District. This scholarship will be awarded to a student from her disitrict.

Last but not least, Bay Section has begun to start the wheels rolling as we prepare for the 2019 State Conference which we will be hosting. Janet McMurray is the Conference Chair with much help from the Conference Committee. To date, Alan Del Simone, has secured the Silverado Resort, in beautiful Napa Valley for the location. We are excited to return to the Silverado on April 17-19, 2019. Save the date now. We hope to have a great program for you “Presented in Bay Section Style!”

We’re looking forward to seeing all of you in Fresno at the Conference in May!
